The Inside Scoop on Sit n Go Poker

Free Sit and Go poker gets it name from the way the table fills up. The concept is simple. You take your virtual seat at an open table and wait until it fills up with 10 players total. Once that happens, you start playing.

Of course, since you aren’t paying to play, these types of games are a great way to build your poker skills without risking your bank. But even though it’s free sit and go poker, you still need to plan your strategy carefully and watch the other players’ tells. No money doesn’t necessarily mean no action.

Free sit and go poker No Limit Texas Hold’em tournaments are especially fun to participate in. If you are lucky, you’ll be matched up against some strong players who will give you a run for your “no money.” You can never learn how to sharpen your skills when you are playing against players who are weaker than you are.

At the beginning of the game, each player around the table is assigned a pre-determined amount of chips. The amount of chips depends upon the cost to buy in. The prize amounts are also determined by the amount of the buy in.

The buy in amount is represented by the first number, and the amount that the poker room takes in, instead of taking the rake, is determined by the number after the plus sign in this example series below. Keep in mind that you might experience different amounts at different online poker rooms.

  • $5 + $1

  • $10 + $1

  • $20 + $2

  • $30 + $3

  • $50 + $5

  • $100 + $9

The number of chips each player is given depends upon the buy in amount. For example, if it’s a $30 + $3 level game, or below, everyone seated around the table might be issued only 800 chips. If it’s a $50 + $5 game, or higher, each player might receive as many as 1000 chips. These amounts vary among online poker rooms.

When the game ends, the top three players divide up the prize money. The first place player gets 50% of the prize; the second place player gets 30%, and the third place player collects the remaining 20%. Of course, there’s no real money changing hands because you’re playing free sit and go poker.
