Texas Holdem Glossary
Here are the most common terms used in texas hold em:
· All In – To bet your entire remaining stack of chips.
· Backdoor – Using the turn and river cards to make your hand.
· Bad Beat – A hand with no chance of winning.
· Bankroll -The money you’ve set aside to play with.
· Big Blind – The amount of the larger ante put in by the player two seats to the left of the dealer.
· Board – Community cards shared by all players.
· Burn Card – The card discarded by the dealer before the flop, turn and river.
· Buy In – The cost of entering the game.
· Community Cards – In texas hold em, the five cards dealt face up.
· Dealer Button – A marker indicating who is currently the dealer, or who would have been the dealer if an electronic one was not provided.
· Early Position – First player to place a bet during the hand.
· Fast Play – An aggressive texas hold em playing style.
· Fifth Street or River – The fifth community card.
· Flop – The first three community cards in hold em.
· Fourth Street or the Turn – The fourth community card.
· Free Roll Tournament – Tournament with no entry fees.
· Heads Up – Only 2 players remain.
· Hole Cards – The 2 cards in the players hand.
· In Position – Playing after another person.
· Late Position – The last person to receive cards.
· Limit Game – Maximum bet determined by the size of the big blind.
· Low Limit Game – A small stakes game.
· Middle Position – The player acting half way through the round.
· No Limit Game –The maximum bet equals the number of chips a player has.
· Nuts – The best hand possible.
· Pocket Cards – Same as hole cards.
· Pocket Pair – Two cards with the same rank.
· Pot Limit – A bet may be as high as the amount in the pot.
· Pot Odds – The amount of the pot versus the size of the bet needed to stay in the game.
· Rake – The amount of money taken by the house as their profit.
· Slow Playing – Playing a strong hand as if it were weak.
· Small Blind – The smaller of two blinds deposited by the player on the left of the dealer.
· Tell – Something a player does that gives insight concerning their hand when playing texas hold em.
